SEO for Black-owned businesses

A plain-language guide · Updated October 15, 2026

Most Black-owned businesses are not losing on Google because their product is worse. They are losing because the people searching for them cannot find them. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the work of fixing that. This guide covers what matters most, in the order we would do it.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

If you serve customers in a city or region, this is the single highest return step. Your Business Profile is the listing that shows on Google Maps and in the box beside search results.

  • Claim it free at business.google.com and verify it.
  • Fill in every field: category, hours, service area, phone, website, and products.
  • Turn on the Identifies as Black-owned attribute under Edit profile, then More. Shoppers who want to buy Black can filter for it.
  • Add real photos and post an update at least once a month.

2. Make your website easy for Google to read

Google cannot rank a page it cannot understand. These are the fixes we see missing most often on small business sites:

  • Every page has its own title that says what it is and where you are.
  • Every page has a short description written for a person, not a robot.
  • One clear main heading per page.
  • The site loads in a few seconds on a phone.
  • Images have short descriptions (alt text).
  • Your name, address and phone match exactly everywhere they appear.

You do not have to check these by hand. Our free audit crawls your site and lists every one of these problems, page by page, with instructions for WordPress, Wix, Squarespace and Shopify.

3. Write for the searches your customers actually make

Think about the exact words a customer types. "Natural hair salon in Atlanta" or "Black-owned skincare for dark spots" will bring buyers faster than a broad phrase like "hair care". Give each of those searches its own page or article that answers the question fully.

4. Get listed where Black shoppers look

Links and mentions from other trusted sites tell Google you are real. Black-owned business directories are an easy start, and many are free. Add your business to directories in your city and your industry, local chamber of commerce listings, and any press or podcast that has featured you. Keep your details identical on each one.

5. Ask for reviews, every time

Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local search. Send happy customers a direct link to your Google review page, and reply to every review, good or bad.

6. Track it, then keep going

SEO compounds. Connect Google Search Console to see which searches you appear for, fix one thing a week, and check back monthly. Small steady work beats one big push.

Common questions

How do I get my Black-owned business to show up on Google?

Start with a free Google Business Profile, fill in every field, and turn on the Black-owned attribute. Then make sure your website has a clear title on every page, loads quickly on a phone, and says plainly what you sell and where. Reviews and listings on other sites do the rest over time.

How do I add the Black-owned label to my Google listing?

Open your Google Business Profile, choose Edit profile, then More, and under From the business select Identifies as Black-owned. It appears on your listing in Search and Maps, and some shoppers filter for it.

How long does SEO take to work?

Fixes to your Google Business Profile can show within days. Changes to your website usually take a few weeks to be picked up, and steady ranking gains take three to six months of consistent work.

Do I need to pay for SEO?

No. Everything in this guide can be done yourself for free. A tool or an agency saves you time and tells you what to fix first, which is where most owners get stuck.

What is Google Search Console and do I need it?

Search Console is Google's free tool that shows which searches your site appears for and how often people click. It is not required to start, but it is the only place to see your real search data, so it is worth connecting once your basics are in place.
